The Sacramento region is situated in one of the most flood-prone locations in the nation, there is focus to minimize the flooding impacts on our communities, including the environment through joint projects and leadership.
After the record flood of 1986, Sacramento’s vulnerability was exposed when severe storms exceeded Folsom Dam’s normal flood control storage capacity. This caused large strain on the Levees due to the high-water pressures causing them to nearly collapse in several areas.
Safety took priority.
Planning and the implementation of major capital flood control improvements is SAFCAs responsibility in the Sacramento Area. By improving the local cost-share for projects construction support, we can implement the processes for safety for our Sacramento residences. Various Local Maintaining Agencies (LMAs) provide the day to day operations and maintenance of these flood control systems.
At the directive of the State Legislation in 1989, Sacramento’s vulnerability was addressed and have been working to keep the regions residents safe from catastrophic flooding. Formed under a Joint Exercise of Power Act, Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency Board composed of the City of Sacramento, County of Sacramento, County of Sutter, American River Control District, and the Reclamation District No. 1000.
