  LEVEE VEGETATION RESEARCH
In the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, flood risk managers across the
nation were reminded of the severe consequences of levee failure especially in deep urban floodplains.
While many mechanisms of levee failure are well understood, the effects of vegetation on levee performance are not. The Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA), has partnered with a number of local, State and federal agencies to undertake original scientific research to address vegetation policy issues affecting the State and federal levee systems in the California Central Valley. This team-based effort is called the California Levee Vegetation Research Program (CLVRP).
