  Flood Insurance - Smart Choice

Flood Insurance: The Smart Choice for Sacramento Property Owners

Flood risk is reduced but not eliminated.
Recent improvements to regional flood controls have reduced but not eliminated the flood risk to our community.  The source of this risk is the potential failure of a Sacramento-area levee.

Living behind levees carries risks.
All levees, including the levees in our region, are built to provide a specific level of flood protection.  However, powerful storms can create dangerous river conditions that cross this safety threshold, causing levees to fail or overtop.

Flood control authorities recommend flood insurance.
Because of this risk, the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the City of Sacramento and Sacramento County urge the more than 121,000 property owners who are protected by a Sacramento levee to carry flood insurance.

Nearly all of these property owners live within a few miles of a levee that meets but does not significantly exceed FEMA’s 100-year standard of flood protection.  (This standard means that property has a 1% annual chance of flooding.)  Click here to view a Flood Risk Map of the Sacramento Region .

Low-cost flood insurance is available.
Most Sacramento property owners who have been released from the Federal flood insurance requirement—the area shown in light- and dark-green on the Flood Risk Map of the Sacramento Region—are now eligible for low-cost Preferred Risk flood insurance.  Guaranteed by the Federal government, Preferred Risk Policies provide full flood insurance protection for about half the price of Standard, or required, flood insurance.  Click here for more information on Preferred Risk Policies .
