Construction of Improvements to the South Sacramento Streams Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), in partnership with the Central Valley Flood Protection Board (formerly the Reclamation Board) (CVFPB) and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA) is currently constructing flood improvements to Elder, Florin and Unionhouse Creeks, as part of the South Sacramento Streams Project.  The current work is located between Franklin Boulevard and Morrison Creek.

Along Elder and Florin Creeks, the work comprises construction of new concrete floodwalls on both sides, excavation and reshaping of the creeks and associated improvements.  Along Unionhouse Creek, the work comprises construction of a concrete floodwall along the north bank and excavation and widening of the creek.  There is some minor work remaining from the prior Morrison Creek work that has been included in this contract.

A contract was awarded to SMP Services (SMP) on September 26 2007, and SMP began work in May 2008.   Nordic Construction is the primary earthwork subcontractor on the project.  About every two weeks, we will update this webpage with a description of the activities expected to occur in the subsequent two weeks.

UPCOMING CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

August 8, 2008

At the August 7, 2008 construction meeting, the contractor indicated the following activities are projected to occur in the next few weeks.

  1. On Morrison Creek, the contractor is continuing with improvements to the Shining Star/G Parkway Bridge.
  2. On Elder Creek, the contractor is continuing construction of the floodwall and footing along both banks.  In other reaches of Elder Creek, the contractor is excavating and reshaping the channel slopes and bottom.  The contractor continues to the low flow channel in Elder Creek.
  3. On Unionhouse Creek, the contractor has removed the organic material from the channel and left bank, and is now excavating and reshaping the channel.  They are also excavating for the floodwall footing along the right (north) bank.  Forming and placing of steel reinforcement will continue, as will concrete placement of the new floodwall.
  4. Removal of the stockpiles material in the north basin of the Franklin/Boyce Detention Basins will continue.  The contractor has stopped removal of the soil stockpile on the south side of Mack Road on the east side of Morrison Creek, but this is expected to restart in the near future.
