Flood Insurance Relief

Flood Insurance Relief for More Than 70,000 Sacramento Property Owners

To date, more than 70,000 Sacramento property owners have been removed from the Federal flood insurance requirement. The removal of this requirement is the direct result of improvements to Sacramento flood controls. However, despite these improvements, the potential for a flood disaster remains an unpredictable threat to our community.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimates that, over the life of a 30-year mortgage, property owners in neighborhoods such as Downtown, Mid-Town, Oak Park, Natomas, Land Park and East Sacramento face a 26% chance of flooding. In the Pocket and Meadowview communities, the risk is even higher. Click here to view a flood risk map of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area.

Whether your property is located in a high or moderate risk flood zone, the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State Department of Water Resources strongly urge you to carry flood insurance.

Many property owners can now do this and save money with low-cost, Preferred Risk flood insurance. Preferred Risk Policies give you full protection against flood damage for about half the price of regular flood insurance. Click here for more information on Preferred Risk Savings.

Whether your property was released from the Federal requirement or whether you recently moved to a neighborhood where flood insurance is no longer required, SAFCA hopes you will use this website to carefully review your flood risk and flood insurance options.

Five Reasons to Carry Flood Insurance
  1. Levees Do Not Guarantee Your Safety. Sacramento is protected by levees that can collapse or be overtopped during extreme winter storms.

  2. Neither Homeowners Insurance Nor Hazard Insurance Pays to Repair Damage Caused by Flooding.

  3. Flood Loss Can Wipe out in a Day Your Most Important Investment: YOUR HOME.

  4. Low-Cost Flood Insurance Is Now Available to Most Property Owners Who Have Been Released from the Flood Insurance Requirement. See "How to Get a Low-Cost, Preferred Risk Flood Insurance Policy."

  5. Most Federal Disaster Assistance Must Be Repaid: In most cases, the Federal government issues disaster assistance to flood victims in the form of low-interest loans. If you receive one of these loans, you must repay it in addition to any mortgage you already carry on your home or building.
